A Letter From Our Recruitment Chair

My name is Phoebe Long and I am the new VP Membership, or Recruitment Chair, of the Alpha Pi Chapter of Delta Gamma. Prior to moving to Tucson, I was raised in both Los Angeles and San Francisco, California. I am currently a junior at the University of Arizona, majoring in Psychology and minoring in Family Studies and Human Development. When I’m not doing school work or activities with Delta Gamma, I am participating in the Chimes Junior Honorary club. As Alpha Pi’s recruitment chair, I will be overseeing and organizing our chapter’s recruitment while serving as the representative and communicator on behalf of Delta Gamma to the University of Arizona Panhellenic Office.

Welcoming potential new members and gaining a new member class is something Delta Gamma’s members enjoy and put heavy focus on every year. Delta Gamma focuses on a values-based recruitment with the goal of recruiting women who reflect the same values that we uphold as a chapter: character, scholarship, community service, and involvement.

Members going through the formal recruitment process out of high school must maintain a 3.0 GPA to join our chapter, while collegiate students going through formal recruitment are expected to maintain a 2.75 GPA. We value our alumnae and look forward to meeting Delta Gamma legacies, as well as opening our sisterhood to other potential new members who are new to the Greek community. As a chapter, one of our favorite parts of recruitment is helping guide each potential new member to find her “home away from home.”

The recruitment process posesses high stress and emotion amongst our members and the potential new members going through recruitment. I find it extremely important to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for everyone participating in recruitment. Feeling nervous is inevitable, but at least we have each other to lean on throughout the whole process! An important factor to note is to trust yourself and stay true to your feelings throughout recruitment. You will end up where you belong, regardless of the steps you take to get there. You will have conversations in the beginning of the week that stick with you and that you will cherish when it comes to decision time. Aim for conversations that allow you to open up and be your true self. Don’t be afraid to dive deep into a discussion if you’re comfortable with an active member, those are the most memorable conversations in my opinion! I too went through recruitment and still remember specific special conversations with active members to this day.  Becoming apart of such an amazing organization and group of women has only brought positive light to my life. Delta Gamma has allowed me to grow, learn, and enjoy throughout my college experience. I am thoroughly excited to welcome our new members with open arms, hoping I can make a difference in their lives as Delta Gamma did mine.

Preparation for primary recruitment 2019 has begun! I cannot wait to meet this year’s potential new members. Let’s make this year our best one yet!

Love,

Phoebe
